The last days of campaigning ahead of the European elections is the best time to test the attitudes of parties and candidates towards basic income and related policies.
Help us to find out, where candidates in your country stand! Let’s ask them together whether they would:
- back a more active role of the European Union in social policies;
- support EU-wide basic income experiments;
- vote in favour of a Eurodividend, i.e. a modest partial basic income paid by Brussels to all legal residents in the EU.
By doing this, we can familiarise candidates with the concept of basic income and related policy proposals for the European level as well as support candidates who agree with our goals.
How can you participate?
It’s very simple. Below, you find a letter template in various languages, that you can use to write to the candidates.
Feel free to adjust it to your needs and make it more personal – we would just kindly ask you not to change the three questions, so we can compare the results of all answers from all candidates across Europe.

At the end of this month, citizens across the continent will elect a new European Parliament. For us voters it is important to know where candidates stand on issues that are important for us.
Today, the risk of poverty and social exclusion in the EU remains high, and in particular the precarity of young people, child poverty and in-work poverty are extremely worrying. Many people who feel let down by mainstream policies turn towards parties that promise relief at the cost of European solidarity. All this threatens the European project, the viability of the monetary union and, most importantly, it affects directly the life of millions of Europeans who struggle to live a decent life.
Like many other citizens, I feel that Europe needs bolder and stronger instruments to counter the forces of disintegration. We think that providing all European citizens with a reliable income floor in the form of an universal basic income – provided by the EU and member states together – could form a solid foundation to renew solidarity and freedom for everyone in Europe.
Therefore, I would kindly ask you the following three questions:
– Are you in favour of the European Union playing a more active role to ensure that all citizens can have a life in dignity, freedom and the opportunity of pursuing happiness?
– Would you support EU-wide basic income experiments?
– Do you agree that the EU should pay a monthly basic dividend to all its citizens on the subsistence level of the poorest member state?
I would kindly ask you to answer all three questions clearly with “Yes” or “No” and explain your position briefly.
To get your answer out to as many voters as possible, we will publish it on the website of Unconditional Basic Income Europe, together with the answers of other candidates.

Am Ende dieses Monats werden die Bürger*innen dieses Kontinents ein neues europäisches Parlament wählen. Für uns Wähler ist es wichtig zu wissen, wie Kandidat*innen stehen zu den für uns wichtigen Themen
Das Armutsrisiko und die soziale Exklusion in der EU bleibt hoch, insbesondere die Prekarität der jungen Leute, Kinderarmut und die “Working Poor” beunruhigen uns stark. Viele Menschen, die sich von der herrschenden Politik allein gelassen fühlen, wenden sich Parteien zu, die mehr Glaubwürdigkeit versprechen auf Kosten der Europäischen Solidarität. All dies bedroht das europäische Projekt, die Machbarkeit der Währungsunion und – besonders wichtig – berührt direkt das Leben von Millionen von Europäer*innen, die um ein würdiges Leben kämpfen.
Wie viele andere Europäer*innen denke ich, dass Europa stärkere und schwungvollere Instrumente braucht, um den Kräften der Desintegration zu begegnen. Wir glauben, dass die Unterstützung aller europäischen Bürger*innen mit einer verlässlichen Einkommens-Basis in Form eines universalen Grundeinkommens – bereitgestellt von der EU und den Mitgliedsländern zusammen – eine neue solide Basis formen könnte zur Erneuerung von Solidarität und Freiheit für jede*n in Europa.
Daher würde ich Ihnen gerne die drei folgenden Fragen stellen:
– Sind Sie dafür, dass die Europäische Union eine größere Rolle spielen sollte um allen Bürger*innen zu ermöglichen, ein Leben in Würde und Freiheit zu führen und ihr Lebensglück zu finden?
– Würden Sie EU-weite Grundeinkommenexperimente befürworten?
– Stimmen Sie zu, dass die EU ein monatliches Basis-Grundeinkommen an alle Bürger*innen zahlen sollte in Höhe des Existenzminimums der ärmsten Mitgliedsstaaten?
Ich würde Sie bitten die Fragen klar mit “Ja” oder “Nein” zu beantworten und ihre Position kurz zu erklären.
Um ihre Meinung möglichst vielen Wähler*innen zugänglich zu machen, werden wir sie auf der Website von Unconditional Basic Income Europe veröffentlichen, zusammen mit den Antworten anderer Kandidaten.
